New this fall semester, the Georgia Tech Police Department (GTPD) has updated its public safety programs to include information about the ways the new Campus Carry law impacts personal safety.

Developed by the department’s Crime Prevention Unit, the courses are free and address topics such as gun safety, concealed carry, responses to perceived safety risks and more.

“We really think these courses will help the students feel safer in these complicated times, and we wanted to get the word out about Campus Carry since the new law impacts the way people on campus might react in a variety of situations,” said Officer Jessica Howard, who heads GTPD’s Crime Prevention Unit.

The new classes that will be offered are:

• Basic Firearms Education and Safety
• Personal Safety 101
• Self-Defense
• Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events

“The safety of our community is always our first concern,” said GTPD Chief Rob Connolly. “We want to help ensure that people make informed decisions, whether or not they decide to carry a weapon.”
