Meet the Patrol Division
The Patrol Division is the largest and most visible unit of the Georgia Tech Police Department. Patrol officers provide 24/7 police services to the Georgia Tech community, responding to emergencies, preventing crime, engaging with students, faculty, staff, and visitors, and working proactively to maintain a safe campus environment.
A Day in the Life
No two shifts are alike. Patrol officers may:
- Respond to emergency calls
- Conduct building checks
- Assist stranded motorists
- Investigate crashes
- Perform welfare checks
- Direct traffic during major events
- Support athletic events
- Help lost visitors
- Partner with Housing and Student Life
- Conduct proactive patrols
Community Support
- Offer safety escorts (by foot or vehicle) for faculty, staff, students and guests.
- Provide assistance to stranded motorists.
- Perform welfare checks on students, staff, faculty, and guests to ensure their physical and mental well-being.
- Partner with community groups to uphold campus values and build trust through transparent outreach.
Crime Prevention & Campus Patrol
- Actively patrol campus and nearby areas to deter, detect, and address criminal activity.
- Educate the community on safety practices, crime prevention tips, and hazard awareness.
- Conduct proactive traffic enforcement to promote safe driving and reduce crime — including the use of automated license plate readers to detect threats.
- Investigate and document motor vehicle accidents.
Additional Support
- Manage traffic flow during large campus events and sporting activities.
- Support victims involved in incidents and connect them with helpful resources.
- Collaborate with fire departments and hazmat teams to ensure coordinated emergency responses.
- Document and report all criminal activity and noteworthy incidents on or near campus.
- Process arrests according to the nature of the offense and in cooperation with the local arrest diversion program, Atlanta City Jail, or Fulton County Jail.
