Campus Events at Georgia Tech

To ensure the safety and security of the Georgia Tech campus and surrounding areas, all special events must be reported to the Georgia Tech Police Department (GTPD).

Requesting Special Event Security

Event coordinators are required to complete the Request for Special Event Security Form, even if additional security services are not being hired. For any questions regarding security for your event or special guest, please contact Captain Walton at 404-475-8140 or email specialevent@police.gatech.edu.

The GTPD Special Operations Unit manages the safety and security of a wide range of events, from marathons and construction projects to film productions, sports events, concerts, and public celebrations. Depending on the event, security may involve coordination with external agencies such as the U.S. Secret Service, the FBI, or the Georgia State Patrol.

Important Security Policies

Per Georgia Tech policy, individual departments and organizations are not allowed to contract with external policing or security services without prior approval from the GTPD. All security assignments must be managed by or coordinated with the GTPD.

Captain Walton oversees security for all special events, including the operations of the GTPD K9 Unit. This unit, consisting of four explosive detection dog/handler teams, regularly trains to detect explosives on campus. Before large events, the K9 Unit searches venues as a preventive measure. During events, they screen attendees at entrances to prevent the entry of explosive devices. The unit also responds 24/7 to suspicious packages and is available for missions across the state. The GTPD K9 Unit is funded through grants from the Georgia Emergency Management & Homeland Security Agency.

Campus Event Planning Resources

The GTPD Special Operations Unit collaborates closely with Georgia Tech’s Events Logistics Committee (ELC), which is made up of representatives from various campus service departments. The ELC provides guidance and resources to ensure successful event planning.

Depending on the size and nature of your event, you may need to coordinate with the ELC. For more information, visit the ELC webpage.
