Rules of the Road
Traffic laws in general serve to keep pedestrians, micromobility operators, and motorists safe on the road. Remember that bicycles and scooters are classified as vehicles (but not motor vehicles) in the State of Georgia.
Here are summaries of some of the bicycle and scooter laws most applicable to our campus:
- Atlanta City Code 150-405: Scooter operators will obey all applicable state and local traffic laws
- Atlanta City Code 150-204: Bicyclists will obey all traffic control signs and signals applicable to vehicles
Rider Responsibilites:
- Adhere to all traffic laws
- Stop at all stop signs and stop lights
- Yield to pedestrians
- Ride in the roadway and/or bike lane
Park Smart
- Privately-owned bicycles and scooters should be secured to racks using a high-quality U-lock
- Shared bicycles and scooters (e.g. Lime, Bird) should be parked in designated locations
- Shared devices parked outside designated zones will not deactivate and will continue to incur charges
- Bikes and scooters should never be locked to trees, handrails, or other objects, and should never obstruct walkways, doors, or ADA-compliant pathways
Violations Include:
- Failure to yield to pedestrians
- Riding on sidewalks
- Failure to yield to traffic signals & signs
- Using a telecommunication device while riding
- Having more than one rider on scooters
Enforcement
- GTPD enforces traffic violations committed by bicycle and scooter riders
- Penalties for violations will include fines, traffic citations, and/or Student Code of Conduct offenses
- Bikes and scooters secured to trees, handrails, and other unauthorized objects will be removed and impounded. Owners assume all responsibility for destroyed or damaged locks.
