The Training Unit is responsible for training all sworn officers, including orientation training for newly-hired officers, and annual in-service training for experienced officers. By law, all sworn officers must receive a minimum of 20 hours of continuing education training each year. GTPD officers receive an average of 100 hours of advanced and specialized training each year in order to better ensure the safety of our students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
Every year, GTPD officers receive training from the Training unit on topics such as ethics, defensive tactics, firearms proficiency, criminal procedure, and responding to active shooters.
With over 20 state-certified law enforcement instructors, GTPD is often called upon to help train officers from other police agencies throughout the state. Several of our instructors also teach classes nationally and internationally.
