The Georgia Tech Police Department currently has around 80 state sworn Police Officers. Our Officers have the authority to make arrests for crimes committed on campus or up to 500 yards of any Board of Regents property.

How should students deal with panhandlers?

The city of Atlanta has a large homeless population that often relies on panhandling as a means to get money. If you are approached by someone asking for money, very firmly say, “No”. If they persist, contact the police department.

How do we track on campus crime reporting?

Please visit our website: www.police.gatech.edu/crimeinfo for information regarding crime statistics and summaries on campus.

Is there transportation that will take students to off campus residences?

The Georgia Tech Parking and Transportation Department provides students with the Stingerette and Trolley services. Please visit the Georgia Tech Parking and Transportation website: www.pts.gatech.edu for information on routes and schedules.

Is MARTA safe?

MARTA is as safe as you make it. Remember to always be aware of your surroundings, travel in groups, and don’t hesitate to call the police if you feel uneasy. They have their own Police Department who actively patrol the transit locations and ride the trains. We offer the Tech Trolley, which takes you to and from the MARTA stop at 10th Street and West Peachtree.

Is there any crime in the residence halls?

Unfortunately crimes do occur from time to time in the residence halls. Theft is the most frequently reported crime in residence halls. Students are encouraged to prevent people from tail-gating in behind them as they enter their residence hall, always lock their door, and to not leave their belongings unattended in a common area. We also encourage the students to contact the police right away if they observe any suspicious activity.

Do we have surveillance cameras on campus?

We have surveillance cameras across campus, inside and outside of buildings. We are currently working on installing and implementing additional high-definition pan-tilt-zoom cameras throughout campus, as well as on the exterior borders of campus.

Can parents sign up for emergency alerts?

Parents cannot sign up for the emergency alerts. We want the GTENS messages to go out as fast as possible and not get bogged down by additional contacts on the list. We also do not want our Emergency Dispatch Center flooded with calls from concerned parents while trying to dispatch and coordinate with emergency response units. If you follow GTPDalerts on twitter, you will be able to see all the information that we are sending out.

Does Georgia Tech offer late night transportation?

Yes, Georgia Tech offers late night transportation through the parking department. You can ride the Stingerette (7pm-7am), or the midnight Rambler. If you are unable to get a hold of the Stingerette service, you can call GTPD and have an Officer provide a safety escort to your residence hall or building on campus.

How is GTPD working with APD with regard to the recent crimes?

GTPD and APD work closely with each other. We are currently teaming up with APD in the Home Park and Atlantic Station areas utilizing a joint task force police Dodge Charger. We also share information between departments on several different levels, but most frequently on possible common perpetrators that might be targeting the area.

How do we encourage students to report other students who commit crimes (see something, say something)?

The GTPD promotes the “See Something, Say Something” campaign launched by the Department of Homeland Security in July 2010. The campaign encourages individuals to report any suspicious behavior or activity to the police immediately. Anyone that calls and reports suspicious activity can choose to remain completely anonymous.

Should I lock my door to my room and apartment?

Yes. It is important to keep your door secured even when you are inside the room or just stepping out for a few minutes. Thieves will check for unsecured doors and take your belongings.

Should I let other students or strangers in the building?

Every student should have a BuzzCard or key to gain access into the building, so please do not let anyone other students or strangers into the building. If they advise they lost their BuzzCard or key, please instruct them to call GTPD or Peer Leader for that residence hall.

Can we text to 911?

The GTPD does not currently support 911 texting. You may register for Jacket Guardian and use the speed dial features or smart phone app to reach the GTPD.

Have you all thought about using/supporting LoJack for laptops?

There are paid software solutions like LoJack and free subscription programs such as preyproject.com that can help you retrieve your laptop. You should also register your laptop with the Georgia Tech Police at www.police.gatech.edu/services/.

When the Jacket Guardian timer goes off, what is the priority of response?

Our Officers will respond immediately upon receipt of the panic notification sent by the Jacket Guardian system.

What are the rules pertaining to weapons and guns on campus?

No weapons or guns are allowed on campus. You may store a gun securely inside of your vehicle on campus, however, please consider the wisdom of this in Atlanta where vehicles are often broken into. Please refer to Georgia State law O.C.G.A. § 16-11-127.1 in addition to the Student Code of Conduct.
